The audio-visual mass productions in the Arabic Levant as an indicator/provocator of the relationship between traditional music and society
This research tackles via semiotic approach, the current relation between contemporary urban Arabic society and its music, proposing that a drastic shift in the neutral semiotic level of Arabic and Levantine music has occurred, linking this shift to the “triumph” of audio-visual mass media over all other art forms of the 20th century.
The research also questions Structuralism’s understanding of traditional and contemporary Levantine music, based on its concept of semiotic tripartition.
